But.. In a weird way it has made me really think about the holiday in a way I haven't before. I have felt privileged today to be an American citizen- sadly, something I usually take for granted. I am also glad to have the opportunity to celebrate the country we call home and to pause over a meal together to do so. I guess that is what a lot of this ex- pat experience is about anyway- Being able to see a whole host of things with new eyes.
So this beautiful shot was the state of our sink this morning- I was a bit concerned about cooking all day with no sink!
After Chick Fil A, I miss DISPOSALS second! ( besides all of you fabulous people of course who are at the top if the list!) A few too many grains of rice and you are in for it!! So- a plumber house call and a big clean up after a projectile pipe burst, the cooking was underway!
This is a picture of our house ( we have the second floor apartment) and as I walked outside today I thought how funny that no one knew all of the crazy things I was cooking up in the kitchen! They eat pumpkin here as a savory food so totally don't get the pie thing....
Speaking of- I totally scorched it in spots! I'll put a little whipped cream on top! I still
sometimes get confused with my Celsius oven!!
The table is set ready for the boys to come home!! We are having a fun spread but no turkey! I have been told you can get a big turkey, but only if you are prepared to make a Herculean effort. The boys said they didn't even want turkey this year! So it's all sides- green bean casserole, pineapple au gratin, creamed corn, sweet potato casserole, speculoos croissants and pumpkin pie- or should I say a carb plate?!?
This cookbook from my mom had a recipe for mini Nutella croissants, but with our newfound love for Speculoos, we decided to use that instead of Nutella. Wow! Cookie batter inside a croissant? What's not to love?
And as a digestif, Le Birlou. Even this teetotaler likes it- but I can only handle about a teaspoon!
As we sat around the table and said our thanks, we all said a variant on the same theme. Although we love our life in Greenville and miss all of you amazing people so much, we are all thankful for this time together cementing our identity as a family. We have loved so much time to play, rest, travel, pray, soul - search, and focus on really taking care of one another. Being out of our comfort zone all of the time has made our time together feel very special and we are beyond grateful. Happy Thanksgiving!!
